Chapter 12

If Ever You're in My Arms Again

When Fei finally woke up in the hospital emergency room, he felt physically weak and couldn’t get hold of his orientation.  Looking at the ceiling, he did not know where he was.  When he tried to synchronize his brain with his eyes, he remembered seeing Kwan across the street and trying to run after her.  Then he was able to recall being hit really hard on the hip and that was when everything went blank.  When he realized he was looking at some ceiling lights and then some curtains, he was relieved to have his sight back.
As he slowly turned his head, he was surprised to see Kwan in a chair next to his bed.  Although she was dozing off, watching her trying to keep her head upright brought a smile to his heart.  He noticed her wearing a white coat and the stethoscope around her neck.  Thinking he might be dreaming, he forced his eyes to blink a few times.  But when the image remained unchanged, he reached his arm out to touch her head.
Kwan startled awake from his touch and suddenly stood up as if she was caught slacking off on her job.  But when she saw Fei’s puzzling eyes looking back at her, she relaxed and cleared her throat and managed to compose her appearance again.  But when Fei was still regarding her with confusion in his eyes, she thought maybe he couldn’t recognize her in her white coat.  She knew she should be nice to him in his current condition, but she just couldn’t help herself.  “Do I look like a ghost?”  Once again, she found him irresistible when he continued to stare speechlessly at her for a few moments more.
“Am I dreaming or am I in Heaven?”  He finally spoke.  When he caught the twinkle in Kwan’s eyes, his heart rate began to increase.  Then he felt his heart throbbing when she started to slowly lean towards him.  He wasn’t sure what to expect from her but definitely not a hard tug on his left earlobe causing him to exclaim out loud.  “Ouch!”
“Well now you know you’re not dreaming!” Kwan laughed at his lame childish, yet adorable pretense.  “And you’re certainly not in Heaven!”

Fei continued with his play-acting and gave her a pouty glare while rubbing his ear.  “I’m still your patient, you know!”  But deep down, he was really, really, happy to see her.  In fact, he was over the moon, but he was also trying really hard not to reveal his joy. “Is that how you treat your patients?”
Knowing his brain was still in tact and certain he was back to his normal self, Kwan decided to play along to see how far he would go in the game before surrendering to the smile hidden in his eyes.  And playing to win was her goal, so she folded her arms across her bosom as he continued to complain and smooch his ear.  “Then would you like your doctor to kiss it better instead?”
While making his best effort to keep his smile from surfacing, Fei saw the grin from Kwan and understood the game was on.  He braved it up and aimed straight for the grand prize.  So he pointed to his lips and answered at the same time.  “That would be a start!”

Smiling, Kwan began walking to the other side of his bed without taking her eyes off Fei who also followed her movement without a single blink.  When she got to the head of the bed, she leaned forward making him think she was giving in to his request.  With a smirk, she reached above his head to press a button.  “I’ll call your doctor in and tell him your request.”
Realizing he’d been tricked, he immediately grabbed Kwan’s shoulders.  His action caught Kwan by surprise and she stumbled and landed her upper body against his chest.  When she tilted her head, their eyes met.  Adrenaline overtook Fei and he lifted his hand up to her neck and pulled her closer.  Instantly, he settled his mouth on hers.  Her lips were soft and tender, awakening his deep hidden desire for her again.

Like sweet surrender, Kwan opened up to his kiss.  She could feel his wanting desire for her once again.  It only took a few seconds into the kiss to realize that her guarded emotions for him over the last year were becoming undone and she was wanting him all over again.  As the kiss deepened, she had to admit the wanting was always there no matter how she tried to shield herself from himin the past.
Suddenly the curtains drew open and Kwan pulled back immediately.  A Chinese man in a white coat cleared his throat and stepped forward.  Then a nurse entered holding a tray of medical supplies and smiled at them, she appeared much more smittened than the couple who was just caught in the act.

Then the Caucasian man whom Fei thought looked familiar appeared next to the Chinese doctor and gave him a smile. Then he approached Kwan and gave her a sly wink and said cheekily.  “Looks like our patient got the best medication in the house.  We may have found the prescription that cures all!”

Fei noticed Kwan’s blushing as she backed herself into the nearest corner.  Though embarrassed at this instance, he couldn’t stop his smitten smile from surfacing.

“Mr. Tsui, you gave this young lady here quite a scare this morning!”  The Caucasian man spoke with a nod of his head towards Kwan’s direction.

Fei recognized the voice right away and felt shamefully petty to have thought Kwan was involved in a relationship with this man in the white coat.  He was still having trouble shaking off his imaginary images of Kwan being in bed with another man since the phone call incident.

“Mr. Tsui, I’m Dr. Lam, the attending doctor when you were brought into the emergency.”  The Chinese doctor introduced himself.  Then he pointed to the Caucasian man in the white coat.  “Dr. Millard was at the accident site and took care of you.  That’s why you were able to recover so quickly.”

Dr. Millard noticed Fei’s look of concern on his face and somehow felt there was a need to spare him from his misery.  “Oh but don’t worry!  I was not the one who gave you mouth to mouth!”  Dr. Millard quickly interjected with another cheeky smile.  Again he referenced Kwan with a nod of his head.  “She was the one who brought you back to life!”
At first, Fei wasn’t sure if he should take the jovial doctor seriously, especially when he grinned and gave Kwan another wink.  But when laughter broke out in the room, Fei managed to lock a quick glance with Kwan and noticed her cheeks were rosy pink.  That was when he knew the doctor was telling the truth.

Going along with the ambience of the room, Fei smiled and thanked Dr. Millard sincerely.  “I’m really, really happy to know it wasn’t your mouth on mine!”

Hence, Dr. Millard recognized Fei’s voice, along with his accent.  “Oh!  I recognize your voice!”
He then turned to look at Kwan who was still standing quietly at the corner.  “He was the one who called you.”
It took perhaps a fraction of a second for Kwan to know what Dr. Millard was talking about and another split millisecond for her to finally realize the reason the mysterious phone line went dead that morning.  Remembering the kiss just moments before, she could feel her cheeks heating up again as she turned to look at Fei.  When he realized what she was thinking, he gave her a look of guilt.  But when her cheeks turned to the Fuscia or Hot Pink shade, his dimpled smile appeared.

Dr. Millard caught the exchange of glances and laughed heartily.  “Oh Boy!  I hope I didn’t cause any trouble that morning!  I can imagine how that must have sounded, a strange man waking up your girlfriend in the morning!”

Fei felt completely transparent and wished there was a hole for him to bury his head into.  However, he was glad that Kwan was referenced as his girlfriend.  He was even happier when she didn’t try to correct the doctor.  But knowing her the way he did, he knew she wouldn’t be in a position to deny their relationship, eventhough they were not officially back together yet.  However, he was certain she still had feelings for him because of the kiss they had just shared before they were untimely interrupted.

“If I were you, Mr. Tsui, I’d keep an eye on this one!”  Dr. Millard said to Fei.  “She’s quite a catch on campus!  You know what I mean!”

Though it was a rhetorical statement, Fei still nodded to Dr. Millard to acknowledge he understood his words of wisdom.  And when he tried to steal a glance at Kwan, she deliberately avoided eye contact with him.  But he had no doubt other men would find her attractive, he was just grateful she still had feelings for him.  Watching as she approached the two doctors who were discussing his medical file, he knew in his heart he had to figure out a way to get her to back for good.
By early afternoon, after going through multiple tests, Fei insisted he was fine.  He was trying to convince Kwan and both doctors that he did not need to be hospitalized for further observation.  When Kwan finally agreed to observe him for the next 24 hours, the doctors felt confident to discharge him from their emergency care.  Due to the fact that Kwan had a prearranged appointment, she made Fei promise to call Chi Shan to come to the hospital for his discharge procedures.

Chi Shan was totally surprised to learn of Fei’s accident.  He wasted no time to get to the hospital after getting the call from Fei himself.  When he came to the waiting area for Outpatients, he found Fei sitting alone looking rather dreamingly.   So much so he was not even aware of his arrival.  Chi Shan only knew Fei was admitted after being struck down by a vehicle, Fei refused to give him the details over the phone earlier.  “So what were you doing rushing out to a busy street?”  Chi Shan asked when he stepped in front of him, awakening him from his dreamy trance.  He thought Fei looked too happy for someone who was just hit by a car.  “Don’t tell me you were trying to catch a thief!”
Fei was glad to see his friend and the curious expression on Chi Shan’s face brought out a chuckle.  After promising Kwan not to tell Chi Shan of her surprised return, he tried to come up with an answer that would not sway too far from the truth.  “I guess you can say that!  I was running after the thief who stole my heart!”

As they exited the Emergency, Chi Shan caught the dancing in Fei’s eyes.  He had not seen these eyes for quite sometime.  The last time was when he was still with Kwan.  Not possible!  He thought.  Kwan is still in the United States.  Chi Shan could not conceive who could have had such a powerful spell over Fei to even have stolen his heart of steel.  Then Chi Shan started to shake his head in disbelief.  “Didn’t you say Chin Chin and you were through?”

“Did I say it was Chin Chin?”  He asked rhetorically while standing next to Chi Shan’s car.  He loved every minute of keeping his friend and boss in the dark.
As they both got into the car to get ready for the ride, Chi Shan continued with his questioning.  “Okay, if it’s not Chin Chin, who else could have stolen your heart?”  He was also curious if Fei was making this up.  “Why isn’t she here with you now?”

“She has an appointment to attend!”  Fei said carefully and gave his friend a quick smile when he looked his way before turning the ignition to start the engine.
Chi Shan took the next moment to consider Fei’s words as he put his car in Drive mode.  He kept silent expecting Fei to continue speaking.  When he didn’t, Chi Shan was rather choked that Fei was able to give his heart to someone new in such a short time.  “Are you for real?!”

This time, Fei turned to look at Chi Shan.  “About the thief?!”  Fei pretended to be annoyed.  “You think I would risk my life just to be hit by a car?”

Shaking his head, Chi Shan wasn’t sure if he wanted to voice his disappointment or that it was good for his friend to be moving on in life.  The former won and he let it out.  “It’s just hard to believe!  You just ended things with Chin Chin and Kwan’s only been gone a few months!”

“Six months, 12 days to be exact!”  Fei wanted to tell Chi Shan the truth for it was difficult for him to contain all this good news to himself.  But he also had to keep his promise.  “But who is counting, right?!”

Chi Shan gave Fei a double take.  “And you found a new girlfriend already?”

Fei was disappointed and thought to send him an evil eye for thinking so low of him, but he knew it would be pointless to do so.  Besides, he knew Chi Shan wouldn’t see it as he was too focus on his driving in the rush hour traffic.  That was when his cell phone rang and he looked at the call display. “Ah…..the thief is calling me!”
As he answered the call, he was well aware Chi Shan was listening to hear her name.   “Hi….!”  Then he purposely held his phone to his left ear.  “I’m good! … Done with your hair appointment? …..yup……uh-huh…..Chi Shan took care of it.”

“She knows me?”  Chi Shan was surprised and thought her voice sounded familiar.  “Do I know her?”
Fei glanced at his driver and was aware his curiosity had shot up a several notches.  “Okay, I’ll ask him…” Fei turned to address Chi Shan.  “The thief asked if you would like to join us for dinner.”  Kwan said something and Fei corrected himself.  “Correction, the thief asked you to join us for dinner tonight!”

Chi Shan took his eyes off the road for a split second to see what Fei was up to.  He looked at the road again and then did another double take.  When he didn’t or more like couldn’t answer, Fei gave him a smirk and answered on his behalf.  “Yah, he’ll be joining us!”

When Fei ended the call, he told Chi Shan the destination and then closed his eyes for the rest of the commute as a way to avoid talking about the thief who stole his heart.  When they reached the restaurant, Chi Shan realized who the thief was.  He had suspected it was Kwan all along, he just didn’t want to bring his hopes up in case it wasn’t so.  When they entered the reserved banquet room, friends and family members of Kwan seated around the table for 12 got up to welcome Fei.  After everyone returned to their seat, Chi Shan took this opportunity to get back at Fei for keeping him in the dark about Kwan’s return.

“So you are the thief Fei told me he risked his life for today!”  Chi Shan emphasized on the object pronoun. “I hope you are giving him another chance.  You know this is the second time he risked his life for you, right?”  When Kwan but gave him a smitten smile, Chi Shan put his arms around Fei’s shoulders and added.  “This time, it was not out of police duty!”

“That’s so romantic!”  Chin Chin said as if she was in the land of the fairytale.  “If Fei didn’t rush out, we wouldn’t even know Kwan was back in Hong Kong!”

While everyone around the table laughed at Chin Chin’s comment, Fei approached and sat himself down next to Kwan.  She tried not to curb her feelings for him, but the kiss they shared that morning and the time they had spent together at the hospital when she accompanied him to all his tests were not helping.  Though Fei updated her on his and Chin Chin’s current relationship status from his emails, she was still not totally convinced that he no longer had feelings for Chin Chin and vice versa.  To avoid giving a response to Chi Shan, Kwan decided to use something from the past to stop her heart from dwelling in lalaland due to the events of the morning.  “Chin Chin, when Fei thought you were dead, he wanted to die with you too.  Now that’s romantic!  Not getting hit by a car!”

“No, that was stupidity!”  Chin Chin rebutted right away.  “When he thought I was dead, he let grief pull him down.”  Chin Chin continued.  “But when he saw you this morning, he became alive because you came back!  See he’s still okay even though he was hit by a car.  The accident was meant to bring you to him!”

Everyone agreed the truth was spoken, even Kwan herself.  Seeing how she was speechless and smitten, Fei came to her rescue once again by changing the subject of conversation.  “Time to order!  I haven’t eaten a good meal this entire day!  Hospital food doesn’t agree with me!”  When some of the guests picked up the menu, he announced.  “My treat tonight!  So order up!”

As the others went about discussing what to order, Fei turned to look at Kwan.  She turned around and smiled at him as he took in her new appearance.  He saw a tint of pink appearing behind her fair cheeks and remembered her rosy blush from the morning.  Thinking no one was paying attention to them, he whispered to her softly.  “I like your new hair cut!”

Kwan felt heat was rising to her face and turned to look away from Fei to find that everyone around the table was looking at them.  Korean and Chi San were teasing Fei by putting their head on their girlfriend’s shoulder.  When Kwan turned back to look at Fei, he gave her a smitten dimple smile as well.  She excused herself to the lady’s room for fear that her entire face would soon turn red any seconds now.  But Fei chuckled and told everyone that her cheeks have a habit of turning fuscia and hot pink since her return from United States.

If Ever You're in My Arms Again

by Peabo Bryson

It all came so easy, all the loving you gave me
The feelings we shared
And I still can remember, how you touched me so tender
It told me you cared
We had a once in a lifetime but I just couldn't see until it was gone
A second once in a lifetime may be too much to ask
but i swear from now on ...

If ever you're in my arms again, this time I'll love you much better
If ever you're in my arms again, this time I'll hold you forever
This time we'll never end

I'm seeing clearly, how I still need you near me I still love you so
There's something between us, that won't ever leave us
There's no letting go
We had a once in a lifetime but I just didn't know it
til my life fell apart
A second once in a lifetime Isn't too much to ask
'cos I swear from the heart ...

The best of romances deserve second chances
I'll get to you somehow 'cos i promise now ...
