Chapter 3

Looking Through Your Eyes

Chi Shan and Kwan were waiting for the elevator when Fei and Chin Chin walked through the entrance of the restaurant.  Since Chin Chin’s reappearance five months ago, Kwan had seen her on three occasions.   The first time was when Chin Chin came to her office unannounced to bring her lunch and personally thanked her for saving her life.

The second time was at an invitation by Chin Chin for dinner to thank her for helping Fei keep her late brother’s apartment clean.  Kwan had known back then that it was just an excuse to get her to meet up with Fei again, so she persuaded Chi Shan to come along.  That was also the night when Fei handed her a bank draft for her share of the portion for the down payment to the apartment they were planning to purchase.  She was actually quite surprised that the agent and seller were willing to refund the deposit.  But Fei remained impassive to her surprise and said nothing.

The third time was at the movie theatre.  Chin Chin and Fei were seated two rows in front of her and a friend who was visiting from the States.  Fifteen minutes into the movie, Kwan asked her friend, Megan, if it was alright to skip the film.  Sensing her distraction since saying hello to Fei and Chin Chin, Megan was happy to grant Kwan the deliverance.  That night Kwan found consolation as she shared the circumstances of her breakup for the first time with anyone.  That was two months ago and Kwan had not seen Chin Chin since.

Fei, on the other hand, had been relentless.  That night at the theater, when he saw Kwan leaving, he came after her wanting to know why.  Kwan had to make up a lie saying a client had just paged her to which she must attend to immediately.  That night, when Kwan reached home shortly after midnight, he was waiting for her at the parking lot.  Somehow Fei found out she lied about the client and was upset thinking something bad had happened to her.  That same night, Ah Kit told her Fei had been waiting for her to return since ten o’clock.  That was when Kwan decided she needed her space and a complete closure to their relationship.

Over the next two months, Fei had sent numerous invitations to her for breakfast, lunch and dinner.  Kwan had managed to turn them all down because she simply wasn’t ready to share any meals with him and Chin Chin.   However, she wasn’t successful in avoiding Fei the few times when Chi Shan initiated the invitations.  But Chin Chin never made any appearances in those gatherings.

This afternoon was a classic example.  Chi Shan had asked her to meet with him at the bar to discuss a case.  Kwan was not expecting Fei to show up.  In fact, she made Chi Shan promise Fei would not be present.  On the way to the restaurant for their late dinner, Chi Shan still swore he never told Fei about their meeting at the bar.  Chi Shan insisted it was fate that Fei happened to be there.  Now seeing Chin Chin holding unto Fei’s arm as they were approaching, Kwan knew the decision she made two months ago must be carried out soon.

“Kwan, I am so glad your dad and auntie are alright.”  Chin Chin offered upon seeing Kwan.

“Thank you, we are all very happy they didn’t board the flight.”  Kwan responded genuinely.  “But it’s a sad day for others who have lost their loved ones on the flight.”

Chin Chin nodded in agreement.  She smiled timidly.  “Thank you for inviting me to dinner!” She gestured her gratitude by giving Kwan a firm grip on her arm.

Kwan was aware Chin Chin desperately wanted their friendship to go to a deeper level and felt small for not being able to reciprocate.  She looked at Fei and then back at Chin Chin with a smile.  “It’s the least I can do.  After all, you treated me to lunch and a dinner.  It’s about time I treated!”

The elevator door opened up and the foursome stepped inside.  The door was about to close when it suddenly jerked opened again as a woman stepped in.

“Ah Man?” Chi Shan was surprised to see Man Yuen Lan.

Ah Man was just as surprised.  “Chi Shan?”

Then she noticed Kwan and Fei were behind and
greeted them with a nod.  “Kwan! Tsui Sir!”

“Hi! Ah Man!  When did you get back?”  Kwan responded with shock
and turned to look at Chi San.  At the same time, Fei was just about
to introduce Ah Man to Chin Chin.

Then Ah Man gazed up at Chin Chin and Fei finally made the introduction.
“This is Man Yuen Lan, she used to work at the station with Chi San and I.”

Chin Chin smiled and offered to shake hands with Ah Man.  “I’m Leung Chin Chin!”

Immediately Ah Man felt her heart sank to the bottom of her stomach because standing next to her was the sister of the man whom her father was in jail for brutally murdering a year and a half ago.  She timidly nodded at Chin Chin and was glad when Chi San rescued her with his question.

“When did you come back?” asked Chi Shan.

“Just two days ago,” Man admitted with an even more timid look.  She could tell Chi Shan was not impressed by being kept out of the loop.  She was glad when the elevator door finally opened to the floor of her destination.  “I’ve got to go.  I’ll catch up with you later!  My friends are waiting for me. Bye!”

Kwan, Fei and Chin Chin waved their goodbye to Ah Man as she stepped out of the elevator.  She dashed away before Chi Shan could call after her.  As the elevator door closed, Chi Shan stood with a puzzled expression on his face.

Fei tapped his shoulder and asked.  “Did you want to go back down to that floor to look for her?”

It took Chi Shan a few moments to register what Fei just asked.  He looked at Fei and gave him a flat smile.  “No, we better not keep them waiting.”

Fei patted him on the shoulders.  “You okay, just don’t want you to have no appetite!” He tried to tease.  “It’s rare for Kwan to be treating.”

Chi Shan gave him a conspicuous look.  “More like you losing your appetite than me!”

“Yeah, better eat up tonight because it may be a long time before I’ll treat again!” Kwan added as they stepped out of the elevator to look for their reserved room.

Half way into the eight-course dinner, Ah Kit was curious what caused the changes in his dad and Bui Yee’s travel itinerary.  “So you two were supposed to go to Egypt, what made you change your mind last minute?”

Kwan nodded and said.  "You could have told us on Friday when you called.”

Bui Yee’s eyes met Fei’s.  “I guess we ought to be glad you broke up with Kwan; otherwise, we would not be here having dinner together.”

Mr. Mo turned to his daughter who was sitting next to him and gently padded her head as a playful reprimand.  “And Kwan, you have to remember you don’t have to suffer alone.  It's a good thing Ah Kit told us you were always home these days and Ah Fei had not been up here for months.”

“And we noticed you always avoided talking about Fei whenever we called,” Bui Yee turned to Kwan.  “So we put two and two together and knew something must have happened.”

“We were concerned about you.  We can’t go on with our travel plans knowing something is not right with my little princess.”  Mr. Mo added.

“You know I am used to it.” Kwan tried to force a smile.  “Besides, I didn’t want to interrupt your travel plans.”

Bui Yee noticed the sad look on Fei.  She turned to Chin Chin.  “It’s all about timing.  You came back, they broke up, and we escaped death today.  Life could be gone any minute.  We must not dwell in the past but cherish the present.”

Chin Chin nodded in agreement.  When she turned to look at Fei,
she watched as he lifted his gaze across the table.

At exactly the same moment, Kwan felt a gentle gravitational pull
of her head and found herself looking directly into a pair of eyes
and was once again taken by surprise by the love that was still there.

Looking Through Your Eyes
By LeAnn Rimes
Look at the sky tell me what do you see
Just close your eyes and describe it to me
The heavens are sparkling with starlight tonight
That's what I see through your eyes

I see the heavens each time that you smile
I hear your heartbeat just go on for miles
And suddenly I know my life is worth while
That's what I see through your eyes

Here in the night I see the sun
Here in the dark our two hearts are one
It's out of our hands we can't stop what we have begun
And love just took me by surprise
Looking through your eyes

I look at myself and instead I see us
Whoever I am now it feels like enough
And I see a girl who is learning to trust
That's who I see through your eyes ..... (Chorus)

And there are some things we don't know
Sometimes a heart just needs to go
And there is so much that I'll remember
Underneath the open sky with you forever
